Why YOU are Invaluable!
Value of Unpaid Family Caregiving in Maine
Approximately 166,000 family caregivers in Maine provide unpaid support to older adults and individuals with disabilities, contributing an estimated $2.9 billion annually in care that would otherwise be paid for professionally.
Trends for Caregivers & Policymakers
- Family caregivers are shouldering a massive economic and emotional burden—often while working themselves or juggling other responsibilities.
- Workforce shortages are both a symptom and driver of unmet care needs; providers and policymakers estimate thousands more workers are needed to fill the gap.
- The aging population, especially the very elderly (85+), will continue to grow sharply, increasing demand for home-based and long-term care just as workforce capacity tightens.
Care Worker Shortage and Unmet Demand
Maine is missing 23,500 hours of approved home care per week for older adults—care that was approved through MaineCare or state programs but remains unfilled due to workforce shortages. The state needs around 2,300 additional full-time care workers (including personal support specialists and nurses) to meet current demand .
Rapidly Aging Population
Over 21.7% of Maine residents are aged 65 or older—making it the oldest state in the nation by median age and senior share. The population aged 85+ is projected to more than triple by 2060, while the share of those aged 65+ is expected to climb from about 22% in 2020 to nearly 29% by 2050 .
